Sauna, Sweat & Cellular Charge: & Why Electrolytes Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All

Sauna, Sweat & Cellular Charge: Why Electrolytes Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All

This past Sunday, I spent the day with old friends from my bonfire group back in Berks County, Pennsylvania. We gathered at my friend Pete’s farm — Eat Mo Greens — where another friend, Matt, hosted a sauna and cold plunge experience through his small side business, Good Havens.

Picture this: a wood-fired sauna tent, two cold plunge tubs, a crackling fire pit, charcuterie boards, fruit, warm tea — and two big jugs of water. One filled with spring water, and the other pre-mixed with LMNT packets. The air was crisp, the sun was out, and the energy was perfect.

As the resident mineral nerd in the group, I found myself answering all kinds of questions about electrolytes and minerals. Everyone seems to be reaching for electrolyte packets these days — but as I listened to people talk, it hit me again how misunderstood this whole topic really is.

Most people think adding a packet of electrolytes to their water means they’ve “covered their bases.” But here’s the truth: your body’s relationship with minerals is far more nuanced.

Why Your Body’s Charge Matters

When you step into a sauna, your body goes through a powerful physiological shift. Your heart rate rises, circulation increases, sweat glands activate, and your detox systems kick into gear. That’s demand.

But the real question is — can your body meet that demand?

Sweating means you’re losing sodium, potassium, magnesium, and even trace minerals. Replacing them isn’t as simple as throwing back a salt packet. Your body also needs energy (ATP) and cofactors like magnesium, manganese, zinc, and copper to keep your cells charged and your detox pathways running smoothly.

If your reserves are already low — maybe you’ve been stressed, underslept, or pushing hard — the sauna can push you past your current capacity. That’s when you feel wiped out afterward, dizzy, anxious, or “off.” It’s not that the sauna is bad; it’s that your supply couldn’t match the demand.

That mismatch shows up as low cellular voltage — your cells literally don’t have enough electrical charge to function optimally.

Why Electrolytes Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All

Electrolytes are ions — minerals like sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride that conduct electricity in your body. They regulate hydration, nerve impulses, muscle contractions, and energy.

But balance is everything.

Too much sodium without enough potassium or magnesium throws off your cellular charge. Too little magnesium, and your sodium-potassium pump (the Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase that maintains your cell’s voltage) slows down.

Electrolyte packets like LMNT aren’t “bad.” They were designed for athletes or heavy sweat sessions, and that’s fine. But relying on them every day as your main mineral source misses the bigger picture. They don’t rebuild your deeper reserves or support the enzymes and pathways that keep you truly balanced.

Think of it like this: electrolytes are the spark, but minerals are the battery. You need both to stay charged.

Nervous System Voltage: When Physiology Feels Like Emotion

When cellular charge drops, your nervous system feels it first. You might notice anxiety, irritability, restlessness, or brain fog — not because you’re “doing life wrong,” but because your body doesn’t have enough voltage to regulate properly.

This is where energy, emotion, and embodiment all meet.

When you have the right mineral balance, your nervous system steadies. You can process emotions more easily, think clearly, and stay focused under stress. You have energy and grounding.

It’s also where my love for astrology weaves in — because I truly believe when we’re properly charged, we can more fully embody the potential in our birth chart. The planets might describe our blueprint, but minerals and energy determine whether we can live it out.

The Embodied Wisdom of True Recharge

Sauna is a hormetic practice — a healthy stressor that makes you stronger if your body is ready for it. Preparation and recovery are key.

My simple rhythm for clients looks like this:

  • Prep: Hydrate beforehand with real salt + potassium + magnesium.

  • Replenish: Replace what’s lost right after sweating.

  • Restore: Rest, nourish, and support detox gently (think magnesium baths, holy basil tea, intentional downtime).

When you do that, the sauna stops being a drain and becomes a recharge — for your cells, your nervous system, and your spirit.

The Takeaway

When we’re properly charged with the right balance of minerals, our nervous system, executive function, and emotional regulation all align. This isn’t just about hydration — it’s about capacity.

So instead of following generic “wellness hacks,” start by understanding your own mineral foundation. Know what your body needs to meet the demands you place on it — whether that’s heat, stress, or daily life.

Curiosity over comparison, always.
