How To Love Your Body with Safer Skincare

beauty freedom & flow Jul 14, 2018

My journey to a more holistic lifestyle to recover my health did not stop with figuring out what to eat, improving my sleep and getting rid of MASSIVE stress. It included a search to make my personal care routine safer for not only my health but also my kids.

You see, I suffered with a bunch of skin related issues. Dry itchy skin every fall/winter, puffy eyes and eye bags, dry lips, red bumps on my thighs and sometimes my arms, eczema on my hands after my first son was born and dry hair with split ends.

After radically revamping my diet many of these things began to improve but I was afraid to put any products on my body for fear of some kind of reaction. At the time, it was so hard to find safer skin care. I went the DIY route for a bit and that proved to worked in the short term but was not a long term solution for every product I wanted to use. I stopped using so many products out of fear of all the toxins I'd be putting on my body.

I decided to love myself, my body by finding and using safe skincare products.

Why It's Important to Use Safer Skincare Products

The average woman uses 12 personal care products with 168 different ingredients every day.

Your skin is your biggest organ and one of your bodies main eliminative organs. So, whatever you put on it goes immediately into your bloodstream. This is why it is SO important to know what you are putting ON your body, not just in it.

Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (including but not limited to asthma, cancer, and infertility) are on the rise and are due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it's in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home.

There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don't have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry.

What's worse is that the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics in the United States) does not have the authority to remove harmful ingredients from the products we put on our bodies and on our kids' bodies every single day, day after day.

A recent study done in the U.K. found that women had up to 515 chemicals on their face and skin every day!

Unfortunately, in our country the FDA has only partially banned 30 chemicals from being included in the personal care products you use every day. This means that the body care industry is almost entirely unregulated, and unscrupulous manufacturers can and do include any number of toxic chemicals in their products. By contrast, the European Union has banned close to 1400 and Canada close to 600!

AND many of those toxins are endocrine disruptors! GAH -ladies, this is a big flippin' problem! If you want healthy hormones getting safer skin care products in your arsenal will be so important for you!

Suffice it to say, choosing non-toxic skin care products became a necessity. If I was using several products on my face, then on my body, then my hair and then adding make-up on top of all of that - how much greater would my toxic load be. I was already working so hard to get my health back and feel good I knew I had to make a permanent radical shift.

After many years of trying about a hundred different products I finally settled on one company (primarily, but not solely) for all my personal skin care needs. That company is Beauty Counter. Not only do they have a 5-step approach to providing safe and researched products, and a "Never List" of over 1,500 ingredients, ensuring that all of their products are safe for your skin and your overall health. They are also incredibly high-quality; they literally look and feel better than the big brands.

I also love their collective mission to protect the environment as side bonus. I had no idea that the coral reefs in Hawaii were disappearing because of an ingredient in sunscreen.

YOU HAVE CHOICE!

The beauty is, you have a choice. Once you know better, you can do better. Only you can control what goes on your skin, so choose wisely.

This is a part of my mission as a woman and health educator to make sure I not only inspire you to become the best version of you but to educate and inform you along the way too. I have so many clients on a mission to clean up their entire life including safer skin care and I refer them all to many of Beauty Counter's products.

You can head on over to my Beauty Counter store and go look around.

My favorite Beauty Coutner products currently include:

1. Concealer Pen

I'm not a big make-up girl. I don't wear liquid foundation, but I love a way to touch up on the run and before I shoot a video or go out. This pen is a life saver, I'm not exaggerating. So convenient and easy to use. The last concealer I purchased from another company that is also more holistic minded actually caused a bit of irritation every time I wore it.

I just dab under my eyes and blend in and sometimes on other spots on my face I like to touch up. Then brush loose powder and go. Highly recommend this one ladies!

This particular pen actually was reviewed in the NY Times; 'How to Look Well Rested, Even When You're Not'.

2. Charcoal Mask

l use this mask for 10 minutes once a week to help purify my complexion.

I love it because it deep-cleans and balances, absorbing excess oil and drawing out impurities. Activated charcoal minimizes the appearance of pores, giving skin a smooth, refined appearance. Afterwards I use my adaptive moisture lotion, it's a winning combo to help my face feel fresh and youthful!

3. Mineral Sunscreen

Sunscreen doesn't have to be bad for you, but most on the market contain chemicals that are bad for you and the environment. I love this sunscreen because it works, feels good, smells good and uses a mineral base instead of chemical which is so great for people (like me) with sensitive skin. Plus there is no Octinoxate or Oxybenzone, ingredients known to contribute to the collapse of coral reefs around the world making these sunscreens safer for both people and our oceans.

4. CounterMatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion

This lotion is what I use for my face and neck after I wash my face with the oil cleansing method every morning, and most nights before bed too. A little goes a long way and I seriously LOVE how soft and smooth my face feels.

5. Lip Shears

A life without lipstick isn't any fun, right? Lovely lips make a girl feel fun, flirty and feminine. But there's not reason to be putting lead or other harmful chemicals on your lips in the process. I love the lip shears because they go on so smooth, the color lasts and they have a bit of a built in lip balm element too. They feel very moisturizing. My current favorite color is Rose.

Every woman deserves to feel healthy & beautiful with safer skin care products.

Have you tried switching your skin care products yet? It's a great way to detox and support your holistic lifestyle. If you aren't sure if the skin care products you are currently using are safe, you can go to the Environmental Work Group Cosmetic Database website and type in your product and brand in the search to see it's rating based on what it contains. The lower the number with a green label the better. It's an easy way to start navigating this new territory - trust me there's a lot to know so make it easy on yourself.
