How To Protect Your Health with Vitamin A

In my journey to recover from burnout and remineralize my body, as well as help my clients do the same, there have been so many nutrients that have helped me get back my spark. Vitamin A has been a key player.

I did not grow up eating very many vitamin A rich foods (most of us here in the US didn’t). As I result, I struggled with things like; immune health issues; asthma, allergies, respiratory infections, constant thick mucus, skin issues (dry skin, red bumps on my arms and legs) and gut issues galore. As an adult I ended up with serious gut dysbiosis, eczema and a constant battle with keeping my immune system stable.

It wasn't until I learned more about the fat soluble vitamins, including vitamin A thanks to my friend introducing me to Sally Fallon’s book; Nourishing Traditions. Which then led me to change our diet to more of an ancestral diet including high quality pastured eggs, raw milk/cream and ghee. As well as adding liver to our ground meat dinners...

How I Help Practitioners Get Started with Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

I've shared my story about how I personally got started using hair tissue analysis (HTMA) in my holistic health practice (HERE). In this post, I am here to share how I got started helping other holistic practitioners, primarily functional nutritional therapy practitioners, learn how to interpret and integrate HTMA for their own practices.

Listen to the podcast version of this post- Episode #47 : Find A Joy To Be Me on iTunes, iHeartRadio, Stitcher or Spotify

I often felt like I needed more support and more insight. The truth is, I was already knowledgeable enough to help people and had a lot to offer the world.  However, I felt I lacked experience and wasn’t clear on what was possible for me as a practitioner.

I had a DEEP desire to learn more and my top desire was to get my own hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) done after reading some amazing things about this test. Not to mention, my intuition told me minerals were going to be a key player in my own...

PODCAST: Funderful with Cathy Eason

Often times we create more stress when we TRY to do a super clinical protocol after diagnosis of an illness. I truly believe burnout can occur from getting way to caught up in extreme healing protocols.

In this podcast episode, I have an amazing in depth conversation with Cathy Eason. A colleague and educator who is also recovering from mold illness. We both realized along the way on our journey that FUN and JOY were key to our recovery.

PODCAST: My Mold Recovery

The truth is there are many root causes of burnout and it can take time to find them and root them out. One of the big players in my own burnout was my long term exposure to mold, living in water damaged and musty homes for almost my entire life.

Listen to Episode #43 My Mold Recovery : Find A Joy To Be Me on iTunes, iHeartRadio, Stitcher or Spotify

Mold can take your life down to the shitter- I am sharing this to help you get unstuck.

If you have 'tried everything' and are still struggling with a myriad of symptoms such as; chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, allergies, sinus congestion, pain and infections, GI issues, poor detox, hormonal issues, insomnia and more - it's possible chronic mold exposure is at work.

On my podcast, I shared my own story of how mold affected my health and well being. Recovering from mold illness (and other co-infections) is not a quick fix. The good news is most of us can be restored to health, the bad news is that it takes time....

The sluggish bile connection to slow metabolism

Bile acts like Pac-Man in the liver and intestines where it gobbles up fats, heavy metals, pesticides, unwanted bacteria, and numerous other chemicals that can cause problems in the digestive tract.

Bile is a digestive fluid created by your liver and stored in your gallbladder. Bile is important in digestion and absorption of fat in the small intestine.

If your body has sludgy bile your mood will suffer. You can even become constipated and anxious!

Bitter foods, like my current obsession, radicchio; help you digest your food. This is important because if you don't digest well you don't benefit from the good real food you just ate.

BITTER stimulates your liver to produce BILE.

Bile helps your body break down the healthy fats you eat so you can readily absorb them as well as your fat soluble vitamins.

I love to pair bitter foods with meals that I know have a fair amount of fat, like my chicken salad that has quite a bit of mayo AND some additional olive oil.

Bile secreted by your...

VIDEO: How a long term vegetarian diet exacerbates copper toxicity

In the video above, I share a sneak peek into a client's Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) graph.

Her HTMA results are what is called an extreme Slow 1 oxidative type with elevated tissue copper. In this oxidative type, food is burned at a slower-than-optimum rate. 'Oxidation' means to burn. This oxidation rate is mainly determined by how well the thyroid and adrenal glands are functioning. In this case, both are underactive, therefore the metabolism is slowed way down. A great example is like driving with the parking break on.

When this two glands are 'sluggish' (at the cellular level) the symptoms can include; fatigue, depression, constipation, difficulty losing weight, poor circulation, low blood pressure, dry skin and hair. As well one may tend to get sick more easily and recover slowly.

In the video, I cover the first four macro minerals and
3 key ratios that explain the top health concerns she came to me for; fatigue, digestion and bloating. As well as the top reason her...

VIDEO: What total burnout looks like on a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) graph

In the video above, I share a sneak peek into a client's Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) graph.

Her HTMA results are what is called a Fast 4 oxidative type. This combination is associated with the exhaustion stage of stress, often reflected in extreme fatigue, depression and anxiety.

In the video, I cover the first four macro minerals and what happens in the body and emotions when each mineral is out of balance. In her case, all four macro minerals; calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium, were low.

I also shared some insights into the most important mineral ration on her hair test. A low sodium-to-potassium ration. When this ratio is low, it indicates a reduced vitality and impaired electrical balance within the cells. Sodium is an extracellular element while potassium belongs inside the cells. A decrease in the ratio indicates a loss of potassium into the interstitial spaces as cells are destroyed (even if the potassium is showing high on the hair test).

This low ratio is...

How To Deal With Anxiety In Uncertain Times

I'm not gonna lie, I am feeling a bit on edge right now as the Corona Virus spreads through the world. Uncertainty and anxiety are very tangible right now.

It's important to allow yourself to feel what you feel, but also to lean in more than ever to find ways to soothe, calm and cope. Ways to create healthy conversations, boundaries and establish routine self-care practices.

I decided the best thing I can do is up all of my health practices I've been doing over the past several years, and encourage you to do the same.

I've spent the past decade working from home. During several of those years, I was mostly socially isolated due to recovering from PTSD, adrenal exhaustion and trying to start a business. I am somewhat familiar with social distancing as I've gone days on end many stretches with no human contact other than my own kids.

But this, right now, is different. I'm trying to see the opportunity in it, while also maintaining some level of zen. As well as a time to focus on...

How To Use Vitamin C to Protect Your Health

In my journey to recover from burnout there have have been so many nutrients that have helped me get back my spark. Vitamin C has been a key player.

*Listen to the podcast version of this blog post HERE.

Find: A Joy To Be Me
Episode #37
On: iTunes, iHeartRadio, Stitcher or Spotify

It wasn't until I had vitamin c on board and took it faithfully that I was able to recover from the years of relentless stress I had been under, that put me into adrenal burnout. Stress increases your need for vitamin c. Your adrenal glands have one of the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the body, as well as your eyes and brain.

Your adrenal glands use vitamin c to help you produce your adrenal hormones, notably cortisol. My cortisol was TANKED (based on my DUTCH Hormone panel) back in 2015. So, I had to take vitamin C like it was my new religion. To this day, it's a key nutrient I take in addition to focusing on including it in my diet.

I also stopped getting sick once I faithfully started...
